Shipping Container Conditions & Grades – What to Know Before You Buy

At ccshippingcustomcontainers.com, we provide shipping containers in one trip, used, and refurbished conditions. Each option varies in quality and price based on its condition and intended use. One trip containers are like new, used containers are budget-friendly with varying grades, and refurbished units are repaired for improved appearance and function. We help you choose the right container to match your needs and budget.

USED

At ccshippingcustomcontainers.com, our most popular and cost-effective option is the used general purpose shipping container. These containers have served in international shipping fleets for 5 to 15 years before being retired for resale. While they may show signs of wear such as surface rust, dents, scratches, and original paint or shipping company markings, they remain structurally sound based on their grade. Many used containers are still suitable for a wide range of applications, including secure storage, modified builds, or even continued cargo transport. They’re a practical choice for customers seeking reliable performance at a more affordable price point.

NEW ONE TRIP

At ccshippingcustomcontainers.com, our new one trip shipping containers offer excellent value for those looking for near-new condition units at a lower cost. These containers are manufactured overseas, typically in Asia, and shipped to our depots with a single cargo load to help reduce repositioning costs. This process allows us to pass significant savings on to our customers. While they may have minor cosmetic imperfections such as small dents or scratches from handling during transport, they are structurally sound and ideal for secure storage, modifications, or long-term use.

REFURBISHED

At ccshippingcustomcontainers.com, our refurbished containers start with used Wind and Water Tight (WWT) units that are professionally cleaned, primed, and repainted to improve both appearance and durability. Refurbishing extends the life of the container and makes it more suitable for storage or modified use. We offer three levels of refurbishment to meet different needs and budgets. A typical refurbishment includes prepping and repainting the exterior. A complete refurbishment goes a step further by painting the interior as well. Our factory refurbishment provides the most comprehensive upgrade, featuring new paint inside and out, replacement gaskets, and updated markings, giving the container a refreshed, near-new look.

WIND AND WATER TIGHT

At ccshippingcustomcontainers.com, our Wind and Water Tight (WWT) containers are the most popular grade among customers looking for dependable storage at an affordable price. These used containers are guaranteed not to leak and are structurally sound, making them ideal for secure storage and various practical uses. While they may show signs of heavy use such as original paint, rust, dents, and surface wear, they remain fully functional. Despite their rough exterior, WWT containers offer reliable performance where appearance is not a top priority.

CARGO WORTHY (CW)

At ccshippingcustomcontainers.com, our Cargo Worthy shipping containers are certified for international shipping by sea, rail, and road. These containers have been inspected to ensure they are structurally sound and meet the requirements for export. While the exterior may show signs of wear such as original paint, old shipping markings, rust, abrasions, and dents, the container is fully functional for global transport. For export use, each unit must pass a container survey and carry a valid CSC inspection sticker to comply with shipping standards.

IICL (IICL-6)

At ccshippingcustomcontainers.com, IICL containers meet the strict inspection standards set by the Institute of International Container Lessors, making them a top choice for export and high-quality storage needs. These containers are in excellent condition with a higher resale value due to their minimal wear and superior structural integrity. Visually, they look much better than standard Wind and Water Tight (WWT) containers, with fewer dents, less rust, and a cleaner overall appearance—ideal for customers seeking reliability and aesthetics.

AS IS

At ccshippingcustomcontainers.com, an As Is container refers to a shipping container that has been inspected and found to have significant damage, making repairs to restore it to Wind and Watertight condition impractical or too costly. These containers may have issues like holes, broken flooring, and other structural problems both inside and out. Because of their condition, we generally do not recommend As Is containers unless you plan to use them for purposes where structural integrity and appearance are not important.
